A Wonderful New Year

This is a wonderful way to start the new year, The Liebster Blog Award awarded to Reform School Art by the barnswallowLiebster is a German word that  translates as favorite or dearest.  This award originated in Germany and is intended to recognize up and coming bloggers.  Those distinguished by this award have fewer than 200 followers.

I am in the process of ending two of my blogs, Abyssal Plain and Patricia Powell Kessler.  Now I will have more time than ever to commit to posting about my love of teaching and learning art.  So thanks so much, Lotta, Mary Ann and Janice for this award.

I have nominated the following five blogs for the Liebster Blog Award:
Anna Mavromatis: Artists' Books
Furniture
Samartdog
Drucilla Pettibone
Photographs from a White Space

  1. patricia, what a startling way to meet you. i thank you. i am an odd duck though, i think, when it comes to awards or traffic. i am good just being small and doing the work, which really for me is a self indulgence and investigation into my place inside this world. but if it means i get to meet you - well, then, i am so very thankful.

    nice to meet you:)

  3. Erin,

Yes, this is a startling way to meet. I have admired your photography for sometime and agree with the concept that the content and act of posting is irrelevant to awards or to the growth of a blog’s readership. Hopefully there will be those who wish to see what we want to ultimately reveal.

I like your question concerning my own definition about what art is because I have thought about it for a very long time. When I was an art student forty years ago, my vision was quite narrow and, as it was defined by Minimalism, it was also shallow. Now having had the chance to engage with a wide range of art media, work in museums, teach in a wide variety of settings with all age groups and people from all walks of life, not just those with a special interest in art, I think that at its core, it is like music, singing and dance. I don’t think that it makes us “human”, but rather that it makes us a part of the world and cognizant of time and sometimes even feelings and emotions. It is not always “pure” and it can be artificial, but if you need to make art, then you must. It is also wonderful to look at art and to be in a very creative studio environment.

I hope that this makes sense to you!

    Best, Patricia
